MCTE Fall Workshop 2021
featuring KELLY GALLAGHER!

Four Essential Studies:
Beliefs and Practices to Reclaim Student Agency

About the Workshop:

Compliant reading and writing is not the same thing as engaged reading and writing. So how do we engage adolescent readers and writers? This workshop will explore ways to deepen your students' engagement through four essential studies: essay, poetry, book clubs, and digital composition. Integrating these studies with teacher demonstrations, the skillful use of mentor texts, and effective feedback empower students and increase their decision-making skills. Kelly will share how teachers can use these studies to also develop students' independence, transform students' relationship with literacy, and prepare them for the more demanding work of college.

About the Speaker:

Kelly Gallagher taught English for 35 years at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California. Along with Penny Kittle, he has written Four Essential Studies: Beliefs and Practices to Reclaim Student Agency and 180 Days: Two Teachers and the Quest to Engage and Empower Adolescents. He has also written Readicide, Write Like This, and In the Best Interest of Students. Kelly is the former co-editor of the South Basin Writing Project and the former president of the Secondary Reading Group for the International Literacy Association. He has received multiple awards and honors, including the Distinguished Service Award from the California Association of Teachers of English in 2018.
