About Dr. Perry:

Tonya B. Perry is a Professor of Secondary English Education and serves as the Executive Director for GEAR UP Alabama and the Red Mountain Writing Project. In addition, she is the director for NCTE’s Cultivating New Voices program and incoming Vice President of NCTE. In every capacity, she has worked to achieve equity for her students, teachers, colleagues, families and communities, and her work focuses on civically and justice-engaged teaching, service, and scholarship.

Her research in the secondary schools is primarily focused on supporting marginalized populations, particularly in the areas of writing, urban and rural education, and teacher preparation. She is most interested in the ways in which we prepare middle and high school students and their teachers to meet the demands of the 21st century and beyond. About the Book:

All of us in education can find opportunities to interrupt the status quo that allows inequities to go unchallenged. In Teaching for Racial Equity: Becoming Interrupters, authors Tonya Perry, Steven Zemelman, and Katy Smith show us the way. Using Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz’s Racial Literacy Development framework, the authors demonstrate how critical love, humility, and reflection enable educators to understand their own perspectives, identify racial issues, and promote equity for their students.

Filled with inspiring and sometimes difficult conversations, the book captures the real work teachers and administrators are doing in schools today. By bringing essential perspectives and valuable strategies to the classroom, teachers lead students in learning how to listen and learn about one another’s identities and thoughtfully critique the racial inequities all around us.

Registration includes MCTE membership, admission to the Arboretum, continental breakfast, and lunch. All registrations must be made through this site. You may pay by credit card or by sending a check.

After registering, you will receive an automatic invoice by email. If you do not receive this email, you may have mistyped your email address. If this happens, please contact Sierra Gilbertson at mcteinfo@gmail.com to double-check your registration.

Shortly after the invoice, you will receive a confirmation email. If you are paying by school or personal check, your confirmation email will include instructions for submitting your payment. In order to avoid being double registered, please pay with the same account that was used for registration.

Book Pre-orders

Participants may pre-order a copy of the Teaching for Racial Equity for delivery at the workshop by selecting a registration option that includes a book.

Scholarships

MCTE is pleased to offer the John Zdrazil Professional Engagement Scholarships for this workshop to support the attendance of early career teachers and educators of color. Please complete this brief Scholarship Form by October 8, 2022 to be considered for this fall’s awards. Award recipients will be notified by October 10, 2022.

Cancellation Policy

Because meal counts and materials costs are due in advance of the event, we regret that full refunds can only be offered for cancellations prior to October 12, 2022. A 50% refund can be issued for registrations canceled between Oct 13 and 24. No refunds issued after October 24.

COVID Policy

Masks are encouraged for this large group event, but not required. MCTE and the U of M reserve the right to update the masking policy if needed by best public health advice at the time of the workshop. Please do not attend the workshop if you have COVID-like symptoms.
